TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — There is a new city councilman in Tupelo.

Travis Beard, a retired principal and coach, was sworn in as the new councilman for Ward 3. The Ward 3 seat was left vacant when Jim Newell moved out of the city to take another job.

Beard says he is looking forward to serving on the city council, and believes his experience as a public school administrator has prepared him for this role.

“I think there’s a big correlation to working as a administrator in schools, working with parents, working with the public, working with teachers, students and solving problems and working with the citizens of Tupelo and dealing with problems we are confronted with there,” Beard said.

Beard says he wants to help ensure city codes are being met, and he also believes better clarification is needed regarding commercial sign use and display.
