Video: Bill Passes Senate, One Step Closer to Appointed Supers

UNDATED, Miss. (WCBI)-The bill has passed the Senate and soon all Mississippi superintendents may be appointed.

The bill passed 44 to 6 and has moved to the house.

If it passes there, all superintendents will be appointed under the new legislation by January 2016.

In order to keep their jobs, current elected superintendents would need 1,500 voters or twenty percent of registered voters to petition for a referendum.

The bill requires candidates for superintendent to live in school district. Each superintendent will serve a four year term.

Another pending bill in the Senate would require the election of all school board members.

Governor Phil Bryant has an education agenda in the Senate that he says will attract top students to teaching. Attached to the agenda… a pilot merit teacher pay plan.

The governor’s proposal to provide scholarships to students to attend private schools could die if not taken up by a key Thursday (2-14-13) deadline.
