Bill to Fund Pre-K Programs Headed to Governor’s Desk

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – A bill that would that would have Mississippi government directly fund a limited preschool program for the first time is on the way to Gov. Phil Bryant.

The House and Senate on Tuesday passed Senate Bill 2395, which would set up groups of preschool providers. The House voted 97-17 for the bill, while the Senate voted 37-11.

The state would create a preschool program that could serve 1,325 4-year-olds in its first year, using a $3 million appropriation. Groups of preschool providers would have to apply for funds, and would use private donations or other funds to match state money.

The program would have to begin by September 2014, although it could start earlier. The Department of Education would run the program and choose grant winners.
