UNDATED, Miss. (WCBI)-Some Northeast Mississippi legislators may have a major say on legislation that would strip the Public Service Commission of one of its major powers.

Identical bills filed in the House and Senate would take away the PSC’s authority to investigate public utilities. It’s that power that has led to major changes at the North Lee Water Association in Lee County.

PSC Commissioner Brandon Presley says the proposals would gut the agency of its tools to protect consumers from poorly run utilities.

State Sen. Nancy Collins, Tupelo Republican, chairs one committee that will consider the proposals. Representative Jim Beckett, a Bruce Republican, is chairman of the House committee that will review the bills.
