STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) -Boy scouts spent the weekend camping and working on merit badges at Mississippi State.

“This is the one time of the year where we all get to get together and share ideas and work on merit badges together so the boys really look forward to this,” said Rick Maiers, Assistant Scout Master.

Over 200 boy scouts took to the outdoors at Mississippi State for a Camporee weekend, ready to work hard to earn their badges. Hosted by the college of Forest Resources, scouts from all over the region were excited for the experience.

“It’s really fun, the rivalry competitions we have every year, it’s awesome. It’s a good time to be with friends and every one and get merit badges or like the stem program that’s going on now that I’m in,” said boy scout, Warren Smith.

The weekend event gives scouts a great opportunity to build character and share ideas with troops they might not have seen the rest of the year. Some badges earned can really help advance them in the future.

“We’re working on a program called stem and it’s a longer process, more meeting outside from today but it’ll lead to earning a badge called the nova merit badge and it you complete the whole program it’ll lead to eligibility for a 50 thousand dollar scholarship and it’s a really rare badge to earn,” added boy scout Conner Bohna.

The three day event has scouts sleeping outside in tents but some say staying at MSU has been a lot different then other times.

“It’s been really fun for them to be right in the middle of campus, it has been a treat here because we’re actually eating at the cafeteria we don’t have to cook this time,” said Maiers.

Scouts participating in the weekend range from ages 12 to 18 years old.
