MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — It’s been more than two years since 54-year-old William Phillips disappeared from his home in Monroe County.
Now, there may soon be closure for the family of the man everyone called “Pops.”
Investigators with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department have interviewed family members, friends – and, at least one potential person of interest.
Peggy Hall of Smithville told deputies a story of money and murder, claiming she was at Phillips’ home the night he was killed.
Now, Sheriff Cecil Cantrell says his deputies are one step closer to solving the crime.
“We found a key part of the evidence that we needed in this case and we’re going to be in a very short time making some arrests in this murder case,” Cantrell said, declining to reveal many specifics until his investigators have finished pulling the evidence together.
After WCBI’s initial report Thursday, Cantrell said Friday he hopes to be able to disclose more information next week.
The evidence was found in the Piers Chapel community in Monroe County.
