WINONA, Miss. (WCBI) — The town of Winona is making its mark by adding beautification pieces throughout town.

Winona is known as the crossroads of North Mississippi because of the intersection with three major highways.

Now, the town wants to be known for something else, butterflies.

“We are just trying to beautify the town and so we came up with the ideas of butterflies because it just means change is coming,” says Donna Pearson with Main Street Winona, which is overseeing the effort.

The butterfly statues will stand at 6 feet tall with wings reaching 6 feet long.

Pearson is encouraging the town to be a part of the new movement.

“Individuals and businesses or civic organizations can purchase those and paint them and then the city will put them out throughout the town for us. It’s like the catfish in Belzoni and guitars in Tupelo,” says Pearson.

While the new additions will give Winona a cheerful appearance, Pearson says however, it will take time for the trend to catch on.

“It’s an ongoing project so take six months to a year to get all put up but right now, we have 17 ordered and one is almost completely painted,” says Pearson.

Pearson’s co-worker, Becky Wammack says the butterflies stand for more than beautiful land marks.

“Butterflies are a sign of freedom and a sign of new birth and Winona is a wonderful place to live and we want to bring people in to see what we’ve got going on,” says Becky Wammack.

As butterflies emerge one at a time, both Pearson and Wammack hope it will make a lasting impression on all who see.

It’s been September since Winona began the new butterfly movement.
