COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — CBS News Chief Correspondent Byron Pitts made a stop in Columbus Friday.

Pitts was the keynote speaker at the annual Welty Gala on the MUW campus. The event is a centerpiece of the annual three-day Welty Writer’s Symposium that features top authors from across the Southeast and the country talking about their crafts. The Gala is a major fund raiser for the MUW Foundation.

Pitts spoke about his professional experiences as well as the professional obstacles he had to face while becoming one of America’s most trusted journalists. He also offered lessons on how he stays grounded.

“My wife makes sure I take out the trash. I have a list of honey-do’s like every married man in America that I have to accomplish on Saturdays or I am in trouble. I heard someone tell me once in describing a politician who will go unnamed who said there are only two kinds of people on this earth — those who are humbled and those who will be humbled. So I choose to be humble,” Pitts said.

Pitts also spoke about his personal and professional obstacles in his book “Step Out On Nothing.”
