CAFB Furlough Days Reduced

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — The number of days the 472 civilian employees will face pay cuts has been cut in half. The Pentagon announced this week that its 700 thousand civilian workers will be furloughed one day a week without pay starting July 8. The 472 at Columbus are among those. The furloughs will cost CAFB employees more than $1 million in salary and benefits. The base says it is adjusting schedules so training missions won’t be impacted. The cuts continue at least through September and could last longer. The Pentagon also said they could be reduced as savings start to add up. The furloughs will save the military almost $2 billion as it tries to cut $30 billion by Sept. 30. The local workers originally faced 22 furlough days starting in April but the numbers have been adjusted downward as the Pentagon and Congress find other cuts. The base employs more than 2,700 people; 1,450 of those are military.
