Caledonia Seniors Use The Government Shutdown As A Learning Tool

CALEDONIA, Miss. (WCBI) – While the federal government continues in a partial shutdown, the political stalemate in the nation’s capital is turning into a teaching moment for some area schools.

One of those is in Joshua Scott’s government and economics class at Caledonia High where seniors are following this real-world issue and its impact rather than reading about it in a textbook.

“I think it’s good I get to learn about it upfront and get the visuals and see how it’s actually affecting people instead of just hearing about it,” says Taylor Liedel.

Liedel believes Republicans and Democrats need to reach a compromise.

“They’re not agreeing on some things that Obama wants so I think a compromise would work better than just a solid yes or no,” says Liedel.

“Personally I think it’s selfish. So many people have lost their jobs and so many people are without paychecks and they have families and homes that need to take care of,” added Phillip Taylor.

“It was a good way for everybody to express their feelings about the situation,” Taylor says of the class discussions.

And students think they could come to agreement.

“I really believe that we would have the maturity and the overall to come to an agreement. We would take all facts into consideration, not just our own personal needs or wants,” Taylor noted.

These students may not be able to resolve the issue on Capitol Hill, but it’s good to know they are aware of world issues.
