Calhoun Academy Students Join ‘Gingerbread Wonderland’

CALHOUN COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — Math and creativity team up for a gingerbread wonderland at Ole Miss.

Students from Calhoun Academy are among those who built gingerbread houses for the Gingerbread Village at the Ford Center on the Ole Miss campus.

In addition to mixing math and community service, the students collected 1,200 cans of food for the Oxford Food Pantry.

“We require community service hours each year and I know this is the perfect opportunity for them to be involved in the food drive, also to have some hands on experience building a village. We incorporated this as part of a geometry class lesson on different types of applications in geometry,” explained Calhoun Academy teacher Gary Crowell.

“Oh, I’m proud of it. I mean that’s something that the school did and it makes us feel better, makes us look better and it helps out the community,” student Aubrey Schmitz said of the experience.

The Gingerbread Village is on display until Dec. 20. The only admission is a canned food item. Santa visits Dec. 14.
