JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI Sports) – Calhoun City head coach Perry Liles said he felt that people had counted his team out after its 3-3 start. The Wildcats roared back, winning its final eight games en route to the 2A title match Friday.

Calhoun City, however, met its match against Bassfield, losing 48-7 at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Wildcats were looking for their first state championship since 1989

Bassfield has been ranked around the top ten teams in the state this season, regardless of classification.

“We would have had to have played a perfect game to beat that team,” head coach Perry Liles said of Bassfield. “I’m so proud of our kids. We shocked a lot of people by being zero to zero in the first quarter.”

This is the second-straight championship for the Yellow Jackets.

“It’s so exciting for our kids and our community,” Liles said. “We were 3-3 at one time, to win so many in a row and get here, that’s what we shoot for each year, and we’ll shoot for that again next year.”
