CALHOUN CITY, Miss. (WCBI) — Being prepared for a disaster takes practice and planning.

That’s why first responders worked with Calhoun County students Friday.

It was just a drill.

Shots are fired and moments later 10 Calhoun City High School students are dead and about half dozen more are seriously injured in this mock school shooting.

A dozen first responders are at the scene of a Calhoun City High School active shooter drill being acted out — just in case the unthinkable happens.

“We hope and pray this never happens but we want to be as active and proactive as we possibly can,” said Calhoun County Schools Superintendent Mike Moore.

“You know unfortunately it’s the reality of our times. And you can choose to ignore it or you can choose to fight it head on and that’s what we are doing here today,” added MEMA Exercise Director Todd Demuth.

When it comes to being prepared for major violence on campus, students in Vardaman, Bruce, And Calhoun City schools can rest somewhat assured — measures have already been put in place to keep them safe should a school shooting of this type occurs.

“We’ve done security doors, cameras at all schools the last year, so we feel like we are in pretty good shape. But you know you really never know until this happens and again I hope and pray it doesn’t. But we want to be as ready as we possibly can,” said Moore.

First responder reaction time, strength and weaknesses in getting students out of the building, subduing a possible shooter, and transporting the wounded to area hospitals; these are all being fine tuned during this staged drill.

“So it’s extremely important to find out what your corrective action or your thoughts might be in a scenario that’s made up as opposed to finding these things in a real life situation,” said Demuth.

The state-sponsored school shooting drill was coordinated by the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.

In coming weeks, Calhoun County School officials will be meeting with MEMA and the Sheriff’s Department for a full assessment of the school shooting drill.
