Update: Car Kills Wildlife Officer Looking for Trespasser

ITAWAMBA COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — A North Mississippi man is facing charges, after a wildlife officer was hit and killed by a car.

Itawamba County Sheriff Chris Dickinson says they’re charging 19-year-old Cody Weaver with negligent homicide, after he hit Master Sgt. John Collum with his car late Friday night.

Dickinson says they believe Weaver was going 75 miles per hour when he hit Collum on John Rankin Highway, just north of Fulton.

Collum was looking for a possible trespasser at the time.

Wildlife officials say the accident doesn’t appear to be related to the call Collum was investigating.

Collum had worked for the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks since 1999, and was regional officer of the year in 2012.
