TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – Josh Massey spent about 20 minutes this final day of 2012 looking for a bottle of bubbly to ring in the New Year.

“Just a little something special, something different every year,” Massey said.

Most customers coming through the doors of Oscar’s Fine Wine and Spirits were also looking for champagne, or sparkling wine.

Customer service rep David Johnson was busy helping people find a selection to suit their taste.

“It’s an extremely big day, we’re a little excited about it I will say,” Johnson said.

Across the nation, wine and liquor stores sell more champagne New Year’s Eve, than any other day throughout the year.

Most customers at Oscar’s will spend around $10 to $15, and there’s champagne for every budget.

“Now we’re running specials on our Andre Extra Dry for $3 .99, and you have Cook’s Grand Reserve for $3 .99 and our J Roget is $3. 49,” he explained.

What’s the most you can spend on a bottle?

“In this store, we have our Cristal at 212,” Johnson said.

That’s two hundred and twelve bucks for a bottle of champagne and Johnson says sales are strong, even for the pricier brands.

Folks don’t seem to be worried about the economy today? “No sir, not at all.” They’re not worried about the fiscal cliff? “No sir , not at all,” Johnson said.

Johnson says business has been steady throughout the day, and is expected to be strong up to closing time.

Sales figures show that champagne sales are flat this year in Europe, but have remained strong in the United States and Japan.
