Chaney Appoints New State Fire Coordinator

JACKSON, Miss. (Press Release) — Commissioner of Insurance and State Fire Marshal Mike Chaney today announced the promotion of State Deputy Fire Coordinator Brad Smith to the position of State Fire Coordinator. The State Fire Coordinator works with volunteer and career fire departments to enhance and accelerate the growth of fire protection capabilities throughout the State, particularly in rural areas. In addition, the State Fire Coordinator administers the Rural Fire Truck Acquisition Assistance Program (RFTAAP), which provides matching fund grants up to $70,000 for fire truck purchases in rural areas.

“I am pleased to announce Brad’s promotion to this very important position within the State Fire Marshal’s Office. The State Fire Coordinator has the often daunting responsibility of seeing that fire departments throughout the state are equipped and prepared to protect the lives and property of our citizens. Brad is a dedicated member of my staff who daily exemplifies his commitment to the Department and his fellow Mississippians,” Chaney said.

Smith joined the MS State Fire Marshal’s Office in November 2009 as the State Deputy Fire Coordinator. Prior to joining the Fire Marshal’s Office, he served as the County Fire Coordinator and Emergency Management Director for Chickasaw county for 20 years and was a member of the Houston Fire Department from 1983 – 2009. He currently serves as Mississippi’s representative to the National Volunteer Fire Council and the National Fire Information Council. He also serves on the boards of the Mississippi Burn Camp Foundation and the Mississippi Fire Fighter’s Association. He has accumulated over 900 hours of training through the MS State Fire Academy and is a graduate of the Mississippi Executive Fire Officer program. He and his wife Susan reside in the metro area.
