LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — Coroner Greg Merchant says Brayden Barksdale died just before 8 Monday morning from an apparent gunshot from a .45-70 single-shot, lever-action hunting rifle.

The shooting happened at the home at 1782 Sobley Road just off Nashville Ferry Road in southeastern Lowndes County where the child lived with his mother, Amy Richardson, and her boyfriend, Patrick Chambers.

Richardson was at work at Wade John Deere in Columbus when the shooting occurred. Merchant said it was his understanding from the family that Chambers, who kept the child during the day, didn’t have a cell phone and went to a nearby home to call 911. Police radio traffic dispatched the original call as the child being accidentally shot.

Chambers returned to the house and the neighbor greeted deputies to guide them up the long drive that leads to the home.

Sheriff Mike Arledge says the case remains under investigation pending further interviews and testing at the state crime lab.

“We just aren’t releasing much right now while our investigation continues,” Arledge said, declining to say whether other weapons were found in the home or whether powder residue and related tests were performed.

Merchant said an autopsy will be performed Tuesday.

Family members, friends and relatives gathered during the morning along Sobley Road awaiting information and updates, while some close relatives were allowed up the long drive.

Investigators were at the home for more than four hours gathering evidence.
