CHOCTAW COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — Choctaw County school officials will appear in federal court later this month to push approval of the district’s school consolidation plan.

For two years, the school system has been trying to consolidate schools to save money. One plan died last year and the district approved another proposal in October to consolidate Ackerman and Weir high schools at Ackerman.

Students in grades Pre-K-6 would attend schools in Weir and Ackerman and French Camp Academy will remain grades K-8 under an agreement with Attala and Montgomery counties.

A March 20 hearing has been set in federal court to fit the plan into the county’s 40-year-old desegregation order.

School officials say the plan could save the district more than $500,000 to offset $3 million in lost state funds in the last five years and declining property values that have cut into county revenues.

County officials hope the opening of an electric power generating plant opens this year will boost revenues.
