Video: Citizens Oppose Choctaw School Board Consolidation Plan

CHOCTAW COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – About 400 citizens opposed to Choctaw County School Board’s new modified consolidation plan packed the gym of the First Unity United Methodist Church in Weir Monday (10/29).

The modified plan unveiled by the board plans to keep students in the district while allowing for a better quality of education and services, but people from Weir against the plan say they want their children to remain in place.

They say that the proposal was rushed through the process without community input.

“And it seems like the school board is putting the total burden on the minority school. So no other school is asked to make any adjustments or anything. Its just pinpoint this minority school to do all the, going to other places and we just don’t think thats fair,’ said Floyd Patterson, Weir alderman.

The modified consolidation plan is being sent to the federal court.

Under the plan no new middle school is being created.

Weir students in grades seven through twelve will attend school in Ackerman, Weir Elementary students Pre K through sixth grade will remain there.

French Camp students in Pre K through 8th grade will remain there as well.
