CMSD Says More than Half of Third Graders Would Pass New State Reading Test

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Almost a third of the way into the year, it’s an issue school districts are tracking almost daily: third graders’ reading ability.

A new state law says third graders must test at grade level on a state reading test next spring or be held back.

The Columbus Municipal School District board got a look today at current numbers based on preliminary tests. Under the best case, about 65 percent would pass if the tests were this week.

Depending on where the state sets the standard, well under half could pass.

CMSD Superintendent Phillip Hickman says administrators are pulling out all stops to get the numbers up.
