COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI Sports) – The Columbus 9-year-old all-star baseball team finished third in the state this past week. The Bulldogs were fifth in the Dizzy Dean World Series, winning seven postseason games against teams from all over the South.

We talked last week about the West Point 10 year olds that won the State Championship. Today, we visit with coach Reggie Willis and the Columbus 9-year-old All-Stars. They’ve only been playing together as a team since June.

“We practice late at night, sometimes it was three- or four-hour practices,” Willis said. “We did what we had to do to bring them together. They were very determined. They were down a couple times and fought back. Offensively, they hit the ball very well. We made a few mistakes but they came together, hung in there, and picked each other up. Once they got to the World Series, they really adapted to each other. They hit the ball very well.”

“It was pretty cool because not many kids get to play in the World Series, being nine years old,” Jake Doughty said.

“It was fun to win,” Hunter Carr said.

“It was fun to play and win games, we played hard,” Antonio Rowland said.
