Video: Columbus Assistant Police Chief Set to Retire

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Long-time Columbus Assistant Police Chief Joe Johnson is retiring.

Johnson turned in his paperwork to the city late Thursday. His retirement is effective June 30.

Johnson has been with the department for 40 years, and has served as interim chief four times.

He’s also run almost every unit in the department from patrol to investigations. The Columbus City Council is expected to officially accept his resignation at its meeting Tuesday.

New Columbus Police Chief Tony Carleton met with Johnson Thursday evening about his decision, but has not indicated who or when he might fill the assistant chief’s spot.
