Video: Columbus Council Awards Contract for Road-Improvement Project

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — After 10 years of waiting, a Columbus neighborhood is about to see a major road improvement project.

The council tonight awarded Ripley-based Colon Construction a $755,000 contract to widen 14th Avenue North and fill in a large ditch that runs along the road. A separate contract will be awarded to remove creosote that has seeped from the adjacent former Kerr McGee site.

Work on both projects could start in October and be finished by next spring.

About six blocks of the busy road will be widened and a turn lane added between 23rd Street North and the railroad tracks.

It’s the first phase of what could be a 10-year plan to clean up neighborhoods around the Kerr McGee plant, which closed 11 years ago only to later be declared a Superfund site.
