Columbus Council Eyes Pay Raise

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Two weeks before they take office for a new term, five of the six Columbus City Council members could vote themselves a pay raise.

Council members have been paid $17,500 a year for the last eight years for the part-time job. Some members want to raise that to as much as $20,000.

They technically can approve the raise now even though five of six members are returning when the new council takes office July 1. Only Councilman Fred Stewart won’t be back. He lost to Marty Turner in last month’s primaries.

Supporters say the job is time consuming and deserves more pay to attract good council members. Opponents say the city can’t afford it and members knew the pay when they ran for office.
