COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) -The Columbus City Council said Tuesday (6-18) night it is frustrated by the school board’s handling of the firing of Superintendent Martha Liddell.
But they also told the NAACP and other concerned citizens that under state law, the council can’t meddle in the school board’s business or remove school board members without cause. Those reasons only include a felony crime or mental instability. Mayor Robert Smith promised citizens he and the council plan to meet with the school board to get some insight into its decision but that legal and personnel matters also safeguard some decisions and proceedings.
