Columbus CVB Fills Vacancy

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Long-time Columbus businessman Leon Ellis has been named to fill a vacancy on the Columbus Convention and Visitors Bureau. He’ll fill the remaining 17 months on the seat held by George Swales, who resigned in July. Ellis owns Ellis Construction Company.

The board of supervisors made the appointment after a impassioned plea by Supervisor Leroy Brooks to appoint Keith Worshaim, a retired Columbus Police officer. Brooks said both men were qualified but the supervisors would be doing a disservice by not appointing a black because the board’s other three appointments are white and Swales was black. He said the appointment would better reflect the county’s 60-40 racial makeup. Ellis is white and Worshaim is black.
