COLUMBUS, Miss. – (WCBI) Columbus’ Redevelopment Authority updated the City Council with what the non-profit agency says is an “affordable, doable” project to bring new life to an old neighborhood and open a new gateway to the city’s historic downtown.

Authority Chairman John Acker says the project covers 68 mostly rental properties east of the new downtown soccer complex between 3rd and 5th streets and 2nd and 5th avenues north.

The authority hopes to have appraisals complete and a partnership drafted with the city and county within 90 days. That would set the stage to begin buying properties and marketing the area.

Acker says some developers have expressed interest in residential uses supported by some commercial.
