COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — The Columbus Fire Department is honored by government leaders and the community.

Assistant Fire Chief Martin Andrews and the other battallion chiefs presented the City Council Tuesday night with the national accreditation the department officially received from the international fire agency last week.

Mayor Robert Smith presented the department a resolution approved this week by the state Senate recognizing the department for meeting the strict standards. The department is the first in the state and one of less than 200 in the country to earn accreditation.

The standards were a goal of Fire Chief Ken Moore, whose retirement was accepted by the council. He is leaving the city March 31 after 30 years and nine years as chief.
