[bitsontherun XFwZx9m2]COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Columbus may expand its summer work and life training program from 25 to as many as 35 teenagers.
The City Council Tuesday night agreed to apply for a $25,000 state Department of Transportation grant to pay for the program. The grant requires a $10,000 local match, but council members, citing the value of the program because of the skills and opportunities it provides, added another $10,000 with an eye on adding more slots.
Last year, 25 students enrolled in the program and 23 completed it. The 9- to 10-week deal has pays students to work on city projects while also attending life and jobs skills training.
