COLUMBUS, Miss. – Olivia Plant of Columbus is excited about the $1,000 scholarship she earned from Mississippi University for Women and looks forward to being a student at the university next fall.

A student at East Mississippi Community College—Mayhew campus, Plant recently competed in The W’s Department of Art and Design’s first Community College Transfer Student Art Scholarship Competition. The event was designed for students who plan to major in art at The W. Students from across the state were invited to participate and submit their portfolios for faculty review.

Three prospective students were awarded scholarships. They were Plant, who won the top scholarship of $1,000. Kylie Brown of Steens and Pauline Pimolle of Marseille, France, were also awarded scholarships.

“I am so grateful I got picked for the scholarship. My visit to the art department at MUW was awesome, and all the faculty were so welcoming,” said Plant, who plans to major in graphic design. “I already feel like family there, and I can already see myself succeeding in the environment provided in the department. I am excited to be a part of MUW next semester.”

Brown and Pimolle are also students at East Mississippi Community College–Scooba campus. Brown will study graphic design, and Pimolle will pursue an emphasis in photography.

“The Department of Art and Design is quite pleased by the turnout for this inaugural scholarship competition,” said Professor Shawn Dickey, department chair. “Ms. Plant’s award is well deserved; her work was impressive and shows great potential. I am also thankful to Professors Dr. Beverly Joyce and Alex Stelioes-Wills for their hard work in planning and implementing this outreach effort.”
