Video: Columbus Schools Seek Fewer Local Dollars

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Columbus schools don’t need as much local tax dollars in the coming year. But it doesn’t mean txpayers will get a break.

The school board reviewed today a $44.4 million spending plan that requests almost $370,000 less in local property tax revenues than the spending plan that ended July 1. That’s almost two mills on the property tax rate for the school district.

District administrators say cuts in spending and reserves built up in debt accounts make the decrease possible.

But because the amount of money generated by each mill is down about $6,000 from $204,000 to $198,000 this year, it’ll take about the same millage to meet the revenue request.
