Columbus Works to Expedite Electricity Repairs and Improve Utility’s Response

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Columbus Mayor Robert Smith is meeting with Columbus Light and Water leaders today to try to find ways to expedite electricity repairs and improve the utility’s response to customers who could remain without power until Thursday afternoon.

The City Council said today frustration is mounting in East Columbus neighborhoods where as many as 300 homes remain in the dark.

The elderly, people who rely on oxygen, and those losing food or don’t have access to generators are the biggest concern.

City leaders also will get police and firefighters to go through neighborhoods to check on residents and explain resources available from relief agencies.

Police also will step up patrols to crack down on looting since many resident6s are having to stay in hotels and houses remain empty.
