Contract Awarded for I-55 Interchange at Batesville

Mike Tagert, Northern Transportation Commissioner talks about the new I-55 interchange project in Batesville, Miss.

BATESVILLE, Miss. — The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has contracted Talbot Brothers Contracting Co., Inc. of Nesbit to construct a new interchange on Interstate 55 in Batesville.

Construction on the ‘T-intersection’ design began in January and will include longer ramp tapers and traffic signals. The contractor will remove the loop configuration of the older (50 year) design and replace it will the new high capacity design. The new design will allow for a safer approach from I-55 north and I-55 south to Highway 6 by forcing traffic on Highway 6 to stop while the I-55 traffic merges.

“The new configuration is going to add capacity to the I-55 exit lanes and make it much safer,” said Northern Transportation Commissioner Mike Tagert.

The total cost of the project is $3,720,988.79 and is expected to be completed by mid-July 2014.
