Corinth Schools Look at Longer Year

CORINTH, Miss. (AP) – The Corinth School Board will study to a proposal to start classes around the usual time but would extend the school year into mid-June with several extended breaks.

Superintendent Lee Childress says it’s time to give some thought to a different approach. The nontraditional draft calendar for 2015-2016 has school starting Aug. 3 and ending June 17 with graduation on June 18. It has three extended breaks: from Oct. 12 to Oct. 30, from Dec. 21 to Jan. 11 and from March 14 to April 1.

Childress says he doesn’t expect a mid-June finish date to be extremely popular.

He says a shortened summer break would greatly reduce the amount of learning loss research has shown students suffer over the longer summer vacation.
