CPD Charges 2 With Felony Taking of Motor Vehicle

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — The Columbus Police Department (CPD) has two behind bars in connection with two separate vehicle theft cases.

According to a press release provided by CPD, police were contacted by the Moss Point Police Department (MPPD) in regards to a vehicle reported stolen in Columbus having been spotted in the area.

The 1989 GMC Jimmy was reported stolen Oct.2 from 1626 Sixth Ave. South.

Upon inspection of the vehicle, according to the release, MPPD officers identified the driver as 44-year-old Moss Point resident Raleigh Harris Jr.

Harris was charged with felony taking of a motor vehicle. He is currently being detained on a $25,000 bond.

Harris’ next court date was scheduled for Feb. 9.

In a separate case, CPD received word Oct. 18 about a reportedly missing 1997 Chevrolet Silverado. The vehicle was allegedly taken from a property located at 1902 Seventh Ave. North.

Two days later, CPD officers were notified the vehicle had potentially been spotted headed east on 14th Avenue North. After catching up with the vehicle, officers conducted a traffic stop.

Per the release, the driver, 25-year-old Columbus man D’Mario Thompson, failed to yield for authorities, but eventually stopped in the 700 block of Forrest Boulevard. Thompson allegedly fled from authorities after pulling over, but was caught a “short distance away from the vehicle.”

Thompson was charged with felony taking of a motor vehicle; his bond was set at $25,000.

Thompson’s next court date was scheduled for Nov. 6.
