Crowd Pushes Tupelo Toward Public Transpit

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — They filled the Tupelo City Council chambers to voice concerns over the need for a public transportation system.

And the message from ministers, the disabled and advocates for the poor was the same…it’s time for the city to step up.

Some council members have expressed support for at least a year-long pilot program. Others still have concerns about cost, rates and other issues that have stopped the efforts in the past.

But a committee may be close to a compromise to get things rolling.

“We’re going to propose the council allow us to request a proposal from people to come in here and do a pilot program for us, a pilot system, which simply means, we want them to put something on the street so we can gather information to see how effective it’s going to be, how meaningful it’s going to be for the citizens of Tupelo and what kind of ridership we’re going to have,” explained Transportation Committee member Jim Casey.

During their study session this afternoon, the city council also discussed a new police headquarters.
