STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)–WCBI TV is set to begin airing the fourth series in the CBS CSI spinoff. Cyber crime is one of the fastest-growing criminal activity affecting us locally and abroad.

Mississippi State University has gotten national awards in the field of cyber crime research.

On the campus of Mississippi State University are good moral minds opposed to criminal activities in cyberspace, crimes which has been stepped up in north Mississippi and other places on our planet. And although not visible, a cyber footprint remains there.

“I can delete the email on my computer, you can delete the email on your computer, but its gone through a couple of servers. Those servers may have been backed up. So just because we both deleted the email on either end doesn’t mean its really gone,” said MSU Cyber Security Expert Dr. Drew Hamilton.

As depicted in the new upcoming CSI Cyber Series, such crimes cover a huge range of illegal activity including financial scams, computer hacking, downloading pornographic images from the internet, virus attacks, and stalking. One of the easiest form is cyber credit card attacks.

“A lot of banks have good, you know security and that’s, I don’t want to be an alarmist in that particular nature, but you have to be concerned about things such as accessing a bank from a public computer cause you don’t want to have the information you type into your web page being recorded at that internet kiosk,” said Hamilton.

Hamilton, who has for years been monitoring all aspects of cyber security, admits not being an avid fan of television versions of cyber warfare. Which he says looks easier to solve than real life realities of catching a criminal.

“If you are a thief you are going to go after an easier target. And thats one of the plus sides of cyber security. Is if you make yourself just a little harder to exploit, then maybe, you know the thief moves to someone else. Because sad to say there are lot of vulnerable targets out there,” said Hamilton.

In the upcoming CSI Cyber Series, they move to go after and arrest criminals operating in the clouds. One reality is certain…if you connect to an internet, someone can connect to you. There is no privacy on a computer.

CSI Cyber Crime fans are sure to have their eyes glued to the clouds March 4th when the cyber spinoff series aires on WCBI TV.
