Damage Mounting On Mississippi Coast

GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) – Hurricane Isaac dropped heavy rains on parts of south Mississippi Wednesday, flooding some homes and highways in low-lying areas.

On the 7th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, however, some Gulf Coast residents say they’re underwhelmed by the current storm.

Schools and many businesses closed, and Mississippi’s three coastal counties had extended curfews.

Hancock County supervisor David Yarborough tells The Associated Press that Isaac washed away a county pier in Bay St. Louis.

In eastern Biloxi, water stood two or three feet deep on parts of U.S. Highway 90, which runs past casinos. The Mississippi Gaming Commission ordered coast casinos to close Tuesday before Isaac pushed ashore in Louisiana.

Further north in Pike County along the Mississippi-Louisiana line, emergency director Richard Coghlan says Isaac could bring 8 to 10 inches of rain.
