Demopolis Lock and Dam to Close 5 Days

NORTHEAST MISSISSIPPI DAILY JOURNAL
Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway officials announced Thursday morning that the lock on the waterway at Demopolis, Alabama, will close Friday at 7 a.m. And remain closed until Sept. 10 for repairs.

Larry Merrihew, president, Warrior Tombigbee Waterway Association, sent a news release at mid-morning Thursday.

The waterway connects the Tennessee River at the Yellow Creek embayment in Tishomingo County to the port of Mobile, with a canal, chain of lakes and river section used to maintain navigation. It passes through Northeast Mississippi before crossing the boundary into Alabama.

Merrihew said in the release, “The anchor assembly on the upper gates will require concrete removal and some fabrication in order to bring (it) back into shape so that we will have no major issue. This (five)-day closure is necessary. We will keep you posted.”

The waterway is used by commercial and private recreational watercraft.
