Disaster Preparation

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)-Mississippi University for Women had a bio-terrorist attack drill Friday (9-21).

Students had been going to the emergency room all week with similar symptoms and complaints of difficulty breathing.

That’s when one student noticed a suspicious package and called it in.

HAZMAT was on scene by eight helping other authorities evacuate students and remove the suspicious package that turned to be anthrax.

These drills are ran every year by the university to prep in case of a disaster. Deborah Miranda an Associate Professor and R.N. said,

“It’s very important to test disaster plans so we can understand if there is any kind of remediation we need to make in our plans for disaster response. We can do that before the actual disaster occurs…”

The disaster preparedness exercise simulates a live disaster that allows officials to be ready and respond as quickly as possible.

Emergency Response Agencies, the Columbus Air Force Base, and State Health Department all partook in the full-scale practice drill today.
