STARKVILLE, Miss. ( WCBI) — Scholars from across the country are in Starkville this weekend to talk about diversity.

The National Association for Ethnic Studies is holding a conference at MSU.

The conference covers a wide variety of topics from social media, to civil right and gender equality.

Dr. Ronnie B. Tucker spoke about voting rights and says states that are enforcing voter ID laws are mirroring Jim Crow laws.

He says the key to making voting accessible to everyone is education, because many people do not understand the issues.

” I think making the link between academics and grassroots, I think reaching out to our civic organizations and getting people to become cognitive of what it is that the Voting Rights Act of 65 empowered to do, and what state imposed voter Id’s are trying to take away from that, ” says Dr. Tucker.

The conference continues Saturday with more panels about voting rights, ethnic studies and a speech by the president of the Mississippi State Conference of the NAACP, Derrick Johnson.
