COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Everybody needs a place to exercise.

School children have the playground.

Grown folks have the gym.

Now dogs in Columbus, can enjoy the new Bark Park!

Like most 7 month old labs, Dixie is happy almost all the time, so when she got a sniff of the Columbus Park should couldn’t contain her excitement!

Standing at the rear of Probst Park off Main Street, the newly opened grounds feature tunnels, ramps, even a water fountain!

Jillian Garrigues, of Columbus,  is Dixie’s owner.

She says, ” This is my first trip and I really like it. I’ll definitely come back.”

The park is divided into 2 sections.

One for small dogs.

The other for larger breeds.

In a slight breach of protocol, Toby the terrier and Dixie got together and had the time of their lives.

Jennifer Ortega, of Columbus, is Toby’s owner.

She says, ” Toby loves it. He loves to run and play everywhere. He is super-socialized with other dogs, so his best thing is to run up the ramp and things like that and run through the loops.”

About Dixie, Jillian laments, ” She’s new with other dogs, but she’s a lab mix, so she needs lots and lots of exercise, so this will be good. You always worried about not having it fenced in and her running away and that kind of thing, but this will be good. I just unleash her and let her go and let her play around and socialize with other dogs.”

The Bark Park is open from dawn until dusk.

It’s free, but you’ll need to clean up after your animals.

The rest of the rules are pretty much common sense.

I asked Jennifer, “He (Toby) is a pretty intelligent dog isn’t he?”

She answered, ” He is. He learned tricks really fast, up, down, sit, stay. I can’t wait to see how he’s going to do in the dog park.”

So, if you’re looking for a good place to get your best friend a little exercise and maybe even meet some new people and new dogs, the Friendly City has you covered.

Jennifer concludes, ” Something definitely Columbus needed. I think you have to drive all the way to Starkville to go to a dog park like this, so it’s pretty good to have something like this local.”
Tupelo also has a pretty nice dog park.
