Dorsey Earns MUW Black History Month Honor

COLUMBUS, Miss. – Dr. Kimberly Dean Dorsey of Columbus, associate professor of management at Mississippi University for Women, was selected as the university’s 2013 Black History Month Educator of the Year nominee.

Dr. Dorsey was chosen for consideration of the Mississippi Board of Trustees of the State Institutions of Higher Learning.

Each university, as well as the University of Mississippi Medical Center and Mississippi State University Division of Agricultural, Forestry and Veterinary Medicine, will submit one nomination for consideration to the Office of External Relations. Nominees are evaluated based on positive contributions to the campus and the state and advancing diversity among their respective institutions.

Dr. Dorsey will be recognized at an IHL event in February and honored on campus at the 2014 Diversity Award for Excellence Recognition Luncheon Ceremony Friday, Feb. 7 at 11:30 a.m. Past recipients also will be recognized.

“During her career at Mississippi University for Women, Dr. Dorsey has proven herself a true asset to our university and to her local community,” said Dr. Marty Brock, chair of the Department of Business. “She has worked tirelessly to be an exemplary faculty member and to serve as an example to her students.”

Dorsey serves as the faculty sponsor for the MUW chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success. She has served as Faculty Senate vice president and serves on the Academic Standards Board, the Planning and Institutional Effectiveness Committee, the Faculty Research Committee and the University Conduct Board.

Professionally, she is involved with the Business and Professional Women’s Federation and she has served in Management Exchange, which includes several local companies, and as treasurer for the International Business Symposium.

Dorsey earned a doctorate in business administration with a major emphasis in management and a minor in economics from Jackson State University, where she also earned a master of business administration. She holds a bachelor of business administration in banking and finance from Mississippi State University.

Her current research interests include emotional labor in politics and the increased use of forward vertical integration in the funeral services industry. She has presented her research at conferences in the United States and abroad and has received awards for best conference paper and best conference presentation. Dorsey has published articles in the Journal of Business and Economic Perspectives, Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics and Journal of Contemporary Management Research.

A native of Lexington, Dorsey is the daughter of Elder William and Dr. Margie Dean.
