DOT Law Enforcement Officers Seize $646,050 in Union County

JACKSON, MISS. Tuesday, January 29, 2013— On Monday, January 28, 2013, at approximately 10 a.m. MDOT Enforcement officers stopped a car hauler transporting seven (7) used vehicles on Highway 15 South in Ecru, MS to conduct a routine safety inspection. During the inspection, officers became suspicious of a tool box attached to a pick-up truck. Officers from the Ecru Police Department and the Union County K-9 officer arrived to assist the MDOT officers. The K-9 indicated the presence or recent presence of contraband to the officers. The vehicle was searched and officers located a large duffle bag packed with plastic wrapped money amounting to $646,050 in the tool box. No drugs were located during the search.

An investigation of the origin and destination of the cash is being conducted by the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics. The driver was released and the cash was seized pending the results of the investigation. Huff said, “The seizure is the result of officers paying attention to small details and an outstanding example of multi-agency cooperation.” Transportation Commissioner Mike Tagert stated “This is a significant interception of U.S. currency headed out of the country. Drug trafficking continues to threaten our nations security. Fortunately, and because of the good work of our law enforcement community, I’m proud that those responsible will not benefit from this ill-gotten gain.”
