Drug Court Gets Tupelo Location

TUPELO, Miss. (AP) — The First Judicial District’s Drug Court in northeast Mississippi has opened a second location in Tupelo.

Drug court participants are nonviolent felony drug offenders who choose to go through an intensive rehabilitation and monitoring program in lieu of prison.

The program requires participants to check in every day and take random drug tests, something that was difficult for participants from Lee and Pontotoc counties when the only location was in Booneville.

The program serves Alcorn, Tishomingo, Prentiss, Pontotoc, Lee, Itawamba and Monroe counties.

Circuit Judge Jim Pounds, who is in charge of the drug court, says he hopes for more participants in the program with the new location.

The program currently has about 230 participants.

The district’s program boasts 115 graduates since it started six years ago.
