NEW ORLEANS (AP) – Former Smithville coach Dwight Bowling’s appeal to the 5th Circuit was dismissed recently.

Bowling claimed that his 300-month sentence was “unreasonable” as twice as long as sentence guidelines recommended.

Bowling, 57, is in a Virginia federal prison serving his sentence for guilty pleas to charges he transported minor males across state lines for sex and attempted witness tampering.

The one-page 5th Circuit order granted the government’s motion to dismiss his appeal, saying it was filed too late.

Bowling’s attorney, Christy R. McCoy of Oxford, said she filed his appeal once it was denied by presiding Judge W. Allen Pepper Jr., but until then Bowling insisted she not file anything else.

Thursday, she said she will seek to have the appeal reinstated.
