LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)-In today’s economy jobs are still hard to come by. People are finding new careers to guarantee employment.

One career that is continuing to grow is nursing. WCBI talks with a recent graduate from East Mississippi Community College about her big day.

With thousands of Americans getting laid off everyday and 7.9 percent unemployment rate, the job market can seem discouraging.

While many industries are making job cuts, the health care profession seems to be booming.

Kellie Byrd, is a recent Associate’s graduate from the nursing program at East Mississippi Community College says all her hard work has finally paid off.

“From start to finish it’s been four years mostly through every semester. You know I went in the summer also and worked and have a lot of help from my family and from my school mates,” says Kellie Byrd.

Earning a nursing degree may guarantee you a job, but Kellie says it can be tough to earn.

“You study, you think you’re done and then you study some more. You have no social life basically,” says Byrd.

After much persuasion from a close friend, Kellie decided going back to school would be the best for her future.

“I have enjoyed school. Didn’t know if I would when I came back, but I had a friend that kept telling me, go back to school. So I finally did and she came all the way from Arkansas to see me graduate,” says Byrd.

Kellie realizes she would not be accepting her diploma if it wasn’t encouragement along the way.

“It’s great. It has been a long four years, but worth every bit of it. Wouldn’t have made it without the great students, instructors, and parents. And I love them all,” says Byrd.

Kellie also received an Associates degree in Psychology and is looking into a nursing program at the University of Alabama.
