Election Committee Backs Scrapping Party Primaries

JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) — Scrap party primaries and expand the voting window. Those are two of the major findings of a committee designed to examine Mississippi election laws. Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann commissioned the group late last year following the controversial Cochran McDaniel senate race.

The most sweeping change is to do away with party primaries. They would be replaced by what is known as a top two primary. Simply put every candidate is on the first ballot regardless of party and then the top two vote getters advance to the general election.

The second suggestion is to start early voting in the state. The committee wants anyone to be able to vote early for two weeks prior to the election. The third major request is for the state to develop some type of online voter registration.
The report will now be delivered to the legislature to discuss if they want to make any of the changes suggested.
