TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – An Arkansas native who first made his mark in Tupelo as an Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist returned for a special engagement.

Wherever Cody Slaughter goes, crowds are sure to follow.

The 22 year old has been portraying the original American Idol full time since he won the Tupelo competition in 2011; then he went on to win the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist contest in Memphis that same year. It’s all been a blur since then.

“We’ve been overseas since then, we’ve been to England twice and Canada numerous times, and of course the Million Dollar Quartet Tour, that was eight shows a week for almost two years,” Slaughter said.

A return visit to Tupelo meant a full house and a key to the city from Mayor Shelton.

Club owner Charlie Watson has hosted many Elvis Tribute Artists but says Slaughter is special.

“Number one, he’s naturally, natural,” Watson said.

Cody covered Elvis’ entire career during his two hour set, there were early hits, songs from the seventies and of course Gospel numbers.

Fans and fellow tribute artists were not disappointed.

“We do pay attention real close, but Cody is awesome, he does early years so well, he has Elvis’ charisma,” said Elvis Tribute Artist Jack Curtis.

“He’s close to Elvis, we like his humor, sense of humor, he’s a real nice guy too,” said Jodie and Michelle Bulmer, the mother and daughter were visiting for Elvis week from Great Britain.

“He probably reminds me about as much about him as anybody I’ve seen thus far,” said Tupelo resident Owen Martin, who saw Elvis at Randolph High School in 1955.

Slaughter says he feels fortunate to be able to bring joy to so many through his tribute to Elvis.

“It’s been such a blessing from God for me and so I’m not driving this thing, we’re just going and I enjoy it every time,” Cody said.
