EUPORA, Miss. – (WCBI) An effort to clean-up unsightly or dangerous properties in Eupora is put on hold.

Nearly a year ago, Eupora Aldermen found several addresses that were in violation of the city’s neighborhood blight prevention ordinance.

Letters were sent to the property owners about their dilapidated homes, littered lots or junk cars. They began the process of condemning properties, in the cases where owners did not comply.

That process has been stopped for potential litigation, and further discussion covering costs of clean-up for those who can’t afford it.

With no city inspector or zoning officer, Mayor Dan Burchfield says city leaders must walk a fine line with people’s rights.

“The entire reason municipalities were created was that people could protect their home values and their properties. So, it is a balance working all the time between government, not trying to overstep its bounds, but at the same time, protect its citizenry,” says Mayor Burchfield.

He adds aldermen will discuss hiring a city inspector at their next meeting. Leaders will also hold a meeting on April 6th, to work with property owners.
